Due to the extreme difficulty in culturing certain organisms, the importance of Bifidobacterium bifidum has only been recognised in the last 20 years. Bifidobacteria are the predominant bacteria in the lower part of the small intestine and they exert a controlling influence over the overall balance of gut flora. Moreover, they play a major role in the large intestine where together with the Bacteroides group they make up the dominant flora.
