Abbreviated to AMD, Age Related Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the UK.
There are two versions of AMD – wet and dry. Dry is the most common and most prevalent in people 50+.
AMD is the loss of central vision in the eye, so the patient only has peripheral vision remaining which limits their ability to complete certain activities.
The Causes
Dry AMD and the loss of sight is attributed to ‘drusen’ – yellow deposits – forming in the macula.
The exact causes of this are unknown, however, there are a number of known contributing factors.
These include: smoking, age and family history.
Putative causes include: diet, light, obesity, low macular pigment levels.
The Treatment
There are two angles to treatment – treatment and prevention.
Treatment is limited to injections into the eye on a regular basis to limit the build up of ‘drusen’ and to strengthen the Macula to remove the ‘drusen’. However, this is costly and time consuming, and therefore prevention is looked to.
